Buddha Green Tara Empowerment with Teachings on Advice From Atisha's Heart with Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong and Gen-la Kelsang Jampa

JUL 25 - AUG 9

How to be a Kadampa

Over two weeks, the Festival will emphasise teachings and meditations on Advice from Atisha's Heart from our two most senior Teachers. For the first time, all of Venerable Geshe-la's oral transmissions on the verses will be brought together, including his special advice on how to engage in retreat on this text. Through Venerable Geshe-la's encouragement and blessings Gen-la Dekyong and Gen-la Jampa will transmit a complete commentary to all the verses.

By keeping Atisha's Advice in our heart we can maintain a peaceful, happy mind, our human nature and good qualities will improve, we will show a good example in this troubled world and we will quickly attain great enlightenment. Kadampa Buddhists have an especially close connection with Buddha Tara because she appeared directly to Atisha, the founder of Kadampa Buddhism, and promised to care for all his future followers.

"Simply putting this Advice into practice we will naturally become a Bodhisattva, a holy compassionate being who is the object of everybody's love and respect."

Do you feel that your life is sometimes so busy you feel off-kilter?  Is it hard to react well because of life’s pressures?  Do you want to feel more balanced, confident, and have a better perspective on life? In this weekend course, you will discover how to keep your mind from becoming reactive when you meet with situations that trigger stress, irritation and confusion. Learn how to stop being pulled in many directions and stay centred and peaceful by using the powerful wisdom
meditation of equanimity.

Join us this weekend to discover:

  • How to feel calm, balanced and at ease with life
  • How to let go of negative thoughts & feelings
  • A simple meditation that will always bring inner well-being

“When we gain the realization of equanimity our mind becomes peaceful and we do not feel disturbed whatever our circumstances. This balanced attitude is something that we need to cultivate because we do not have it naturally from the very beginning of our spiritual training. If everyone were to develop equanimity they would not be governed by attachment and hatred, and they would find freedom from suffering”.

Empowerment And Commentary To The Practice Of Buddha Maitreya with Gen-la Kelsang Jampa

Solving our Daily Problems with Loving Kindness

Buddha Maitreya is the manifestation of all the Buddhas' realisation of loving kindness. This festival is a unique opportunity to concentrate on understanding and practising the precious instructions given by Venerable Geshe-la on how to develop the three types of love. We will also learn how we ourselves can quickly become a Buddha of Loving Kindness by changing our basis of imputation through Tantric practice.

Through engaging in the festival programme of teachings, meditations and retreat, we can radically transform our own lives and thereby the lives of others, and truly heal our suffering world.

"When we love all living beings, we have no enemies."

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

The Festival will take place in the blessed Temple for World Peace set in the holy environment of Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre, the Mother Centre of Kadampa Buddhism, which is located in Ulverston in the beautiful Lake District, UK. It is open to everyone and suitable for all levels of experience.

What is karma? Understanding why things happen

Manjushri-beach-3-scaled

What is karma? Generally, karma means “action”. From non-virtuous actions comes suffering and from virtuous actions comes happiness: if we believe this, we believe in karma. The law of karma explains why each individual has a unique disposition, a unique physical appearance and unique experiences.  Over this weekend retreat we will explore Buddha’s liberating teachings on karma and learn how to take control of our own future, to prevent suffering and to establish the basic foundation for the path to liberation and enlightenment.

Family Weekend – Overcoming Anger

May 2 - 5, 2025

33-010_DSC_2296-summer-festival

Overcoming Anger (especially towards brothers and sisters!)

A chance for families to meet, have fun and enjoy a joyful weekend with a difference! With guided meditations, team building activities, games and much more, this is a chance for all the family to learn to overcome anger, frustration and other negative minds, and experience a joyful way of life.

The activities, which include drama, art, and outdoor games, are designed to help children develop the skills of how to maintain a happy mind – even when things don’t go our way.

The weekend also offers both children and parents an opportunity to discover the practical value of periods of silence and quiet contemplation: meditation for all the family. All families are welcome, whether Buddhist or not.

Manjushri Family WeekendBased in the Lake District, Manjushri KMC has a Historic House set in 70 acres of lawns and woodland with a lake, streams, extensive paths and an enchanting beach on the shores of Morecambe Bay – not to mention the first Temple for World Peace. There’s no better place for a family break!

The family weekend will begin on Friday in the evening with supper and finish on Monday with lunch.

Practical Info

The programme of activities is ideally suited for children aged 6 – 12 years. All bookings must include children within this age group. If your group booking includes siblings outside of this age range, then please follow the instructions in the booking form.

Onsite accommodation options are only available for those booking for the whole weekend. Details of the types of accommodation available and prices are in the booking form.

Activities are intended for whole family participation, and parents/care givers must accompany their children in all organised activities. Manjushri KMC cannot provide child care facilities. We are a large site open daily to the public, for safeguarding reasons we therefore require that children are under the direct supervision, and remain the responsibility of, their parents/care givers at all times. For insurance purposes, Manjushri KMC and NKT-IKBU cannot take responsibility for your child.

All meals provided are vegetarian (may contain dairy and eggs), with a wheat-free and/or dairy-free option available at the time of booking. We cannot guarantee that all ingredients in our meals are vegan and/or gluten-free, and so are unable to offer those as options.

If you would like more information, or to discuss further, please contact our reception team info@manjushri.org, 01229 584 029, who will be happy to answer your questions.

Retreat Experience

II was able to do a one-month retreat in January, and it has been the most significant experience of my life. I found within my own heart a light, a peace that permeated everything. Every moment became a magical experience, where the divine and the extraordinary made everything feel out of this world. I truly hope everyone has the opportunity to experience the same and is inspired to do a retreat in this special place.

Deepening our Meditation on the Clarity of the Mind

Our ability to remain mindful and focused on peaceful, positive states of mind is essential to a happy life. And of course developing a strong and stable experience of concentration is fundamental to the development of the higher spiritual realizations that constitute our path to enlightenment. This is made clear in The Oral Instructions of Mahamudra where the first of the five stages of training in Mahamudra, our quick path to enlightenment, is training in concentration, specifically on the clarity of the mind.

These days in our overstimulated and distracted society people struggle to develop stable mindfulness and concentration. And even among spiritual practitioners many feel that attaining higher levels of concentration is not possible. Due to this discouragement many no longer emphasize actively training in improving their concentration, known as training in tranquil abiding.

In this Easter course we will explore the clear instructions Geshe Kelsang has given us to deepen our meditation on the clarity of the mind. The emphasis will be on applying these instructions in practice in meditation. By taking our time and building up our practice on the correct basis we will discover for ourself how clear and practical these instructions are and how in fact we can make real headway in our development of joyful concentration. We will see how our own perfectionism and grasping at results is getting in the way of our deeply enjoying our meditation and through that making real progress.

The meditation on the nature of the mind is seen as the best object for improving our concentration. The emphasis in the course will be in giving everyone practical experience of the wonderful qualities of this object, whatever your level of practice is, so that everyone increases their confidence in being able to progress through the mental abidings, in particular becoming confident in our ability to attain the fourth mental abiding that Geshe Kelsang so encourages us to attain.

Because we will also train in maintaining mindfulness of the mind during the meditation break we will be exploring how this meditation sets up for the realizations of Emptiness and the bliss of Highest Yoga Tantra. The skill we develop through training in concentration on this object, can then be easily applied to all our other meditations. Everyone welcome.
